First Internship Experience

The Interview Chaos

My first internship opportunity came through my university: a position at Qatar Post as a user experience researcher. I was super excited… until my first impression went completely off track.

I was late for the interview, which already had me sweating. When I finally got there, the interviewer started with simple questions, and somehow, I messed up even the most basic one. He asked, “What’s your major?” and for some reason my brain froze, and I blurted out, “Bachelor.” I don’t even know why I said that. But thankfully, I corrected myself quickly, explaining that my major was HRM, Leadership, and Marketing.

He then asked about my grades and CGPA. Since I was in a diploma program, we didn’t have a CGPA system; we were graded as Distinction, Merit, Pass, or Fail. Luckily, I had all distinctions, which impressed him and made up for my earlier stumble.

After the interview, he told me he’d discuss it with Dr. Hind, my student counsellor, and let me know. Honestly, I walked out thinking I had no chance, but that evening, I got the confirmation message: I was selected, and I had to join from Monday, and that message made my whole day.

The First Week—Settling In and Finding My Flow

My first official day at Qatar Post went much smoother. I arrived on time this time (lesson learned!), met my team, and got introduced to my supervisor, who was thankfully very friendly and supportive.

We started the day with a presentation explaining our roles and what we’d be working on. My task was to provide both user experience and marketing insights on how to make Qatar Post’s mobile apps, Qatar Post, Turkish Souq, and ConnectedQa, more engaging and user-friendly.

I spent the next week researching, analyzing, and preparing a detailed report filled with ideas and recommendations. I enjoyed the process; it was my first taste of doing something that felt real, something that could actually make an impact.

The Presentation Panic

Just when I thought I was done, my supervisor told me I’d have to present my report. My heart dropped. I’ve always had a bit of stage fright, and the thought of presenting in front of professionals made me nervous.

On the presentation day, I walked into the room and was shocked to see not just my team but also several higher authorities present. For a moment, I wanted to disappear. But I reminded myself of how hard I’d worked and took a deep breath.

Once I started speaking, the fear slowly faded. I explained my suggestions, from improving the interface to adding features like on-the-spot quotations, personal info update notifications, and offers sections. To my surprise, everyone was attentive, and by the end of it, the supervisors actually looked satisfied and interested in applying the ideas. That moment felt incredible.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, my first internship was full of ups and downs, from being late to my interview and mixing up answers to presenting in front of senior management. But every bit of it taught me something valuable.

It wasn’t just about user experience or marketing; it was about learning how to adapt, communicate, and stay calm under pressure. I gained confidence, practical experience, and most importantly, a story I’ll never forget.

That internship showed me that even when things start rough, with the right mindset and effort, they can turn into something amazing.
